Lately, I've often gotten these big, black rectangles obscuring the article's title and most of the lede photo. It's been happening for the past week or so, on various Gawker Media sites. Not all articles are affected, and it only seems to occur the first time I open an article. Refreshing the page seems to remove it. Has anyone else experienced this, and is there any way to remedy it? I'm using Windows Vista SP2, Google Chrome Version 33.0.1750.117 m
Samples - this is what I see when I first open some articles (
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
):
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And after I refresh the page, it appears normal:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :

And !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :

Thanks in advance for any input.

Ads. I suggest you use FF with AdBlockerPlus, or install something similar to ABP for Chrome (supposed it exists).

I'm pretty sure they're ads, too. I am running something similar to your (xp and chrome). They are usually annoying videos, not sure why they aren't autoplaying...

An ad for what, the colour black? And why would it obscure the article? Thanks for the reply, but I'm still at a loss.
ABP is available for Chrome, but I have little use for it. Also, I've very, very rarely ever seen any ads on Jalopnik, and they're infrequent on other Gawker sites.

Are autoplay video ads a new thing on Gawker sites? I don't run AdBlock, yet in the six or so years I've been here, I rarely have ever seen any type of ads (except promoted articles), especially on Jalopnik. If they have added autoplay video ads, I'll be installing ABP for sure.

Because dumb Chrome blocks the ad, but not completely. I'm not going into details here.

Yeah, they're new. I haven't encountered one on Jalopnik yet, but from your screen shot it looks like they are already here.
And I don't run AdBlock either, I want the site to make money so they can hire me as a writer or something. :)

Ahh, makes sense. Thanks.

Hey Lone. Seems like this might be related to an ad. I'll do some checking and get back to you. Thanks!

Could I see a screencap of your installed extensions? I've only seen this one other time, from a member of our design team in office. He's on Mac 10.9, so the common factor here is Chrome. It would be a huge help to be able to compare the extensions on both browsers.

Sure thing. Before I took the screencaps, I did have Adblock installed but it was not enabled:

Nothing really stands out there. Can you visit whatismybrowser.com and copy/paste or screenshot your results? Make sure you remove the IP address field, for security reasons.

I think we may have found a clue. whatismybrowser.com says that I have Ad Blocker installed, which I had disabled and removed.

How often are you hitting the black box? Have you ever come across it in incognito or a different browser, like Firefox?

Thanks again, Ernie.
I'm guessing maybe 5-10% of the "main site" articles that I click on have the black box. The new Jalopnik still gets them, too. The sub-sites such as Oppo and TAY don't suffer from them.
I tried Chrome Incognito, and still got the black box. However, after using Firefox for a few hours, I haven't seen any with Firefox. Interestingly, Firefox does display a VW ad on Jalopnik, whereas Chrome very, very seldomly shows me any ads at all on any Gawker Media sites. Any ads on Jalopnik are for VW, ones on Kotaku are for Call of Duty or Future Shop. It's been that way for years. I've suspected that it's because I'm in Canada.

Hey, are you still seeing this with any frequency?

No, it seemed to stop happening maybe a week or so ago. Sometime after Jalopnik switched to Tiger, but before the other sites did.
